History

The University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) has experienced a dynamic evolution since its inception, marked by the continuous integration of new units across various locations within Rio de Janeiro. The construction of the Maracanã campus initiated in the late 1960s, with subsequent unit relocations in the 1970s. The 1980s saw the addition of faculties from São Gonçalo, Duque de Caxias, and Resende. Further expansions in the 1990s included the Nova Friburgo and Ilha Grande campuses, showcasing UERJ's consistent development.

UERJ's principal campus, situated in Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro, spans an area of 175,000 square meters. The university's academic framework is organized into four sectoral centers: the Biomedical Center, the Center for Technology and Science, the Social Sciences Center, and the Education and Humanities Center. These encompass 25 university units, including the notable Faculty of Engineering (FEN) under the Center for Technology and Sciences (CTC).

Since the 1980s, UERJ has seen transformative changes that have solidified its academic prominence. This is particularly evident in its university units, which have shown remarkable progress in teaching, research, and extension activities. The introduction of the PROCIÊNCIA program in 1996 marked a significant milestone in promoting scientific and technological research, along with the implementation of a dedicated faculty regime, contributing to a surge in scientific output from the mid-90s.

The Faculty of Engineering (FEN) was established through resolution number 84 of the University Council on April 4, 1961, and began its activities on June 7, 1961, following regulation by Decree number 50599. FEN encompasses nine departments: Cartographic Engineering, Civil Construction and Transportation, Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunications, Structural and Foundation Engineering, Industrial (Production) Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, and Systems and Computing.

FEN is located on the fifth floor of the João Lyra Filho Pavilion on the Maracanã Campus, housing its central administration, classrooms, laboratories, and the UERJ Central Library. The Mechanical Engineering Postgraduate course is situated less than 1000 meters from the main campus, in a dedicated complex with research and support laboratories, classrooms, faculty offices, student spaces, and a sector library.

The Mechanical Engineering Graduate Program (PPG-EM) at FEN collaborates with multiple departments and the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (IME/UERJ), maintaining a strong record of scientific collaboration with both domestic and international institutions. These partnerships have facilitated the development of comprehensive research projects, contributing significantly to the fields of engineering and technology.

The establishment of the PPG-EM has fostered synergies among researchers and improved the integration of teaching and research activities, aligning with the principles of the Law of Guidelines and Bases. The program's approval by the University's Higher Council for Education and Research and the Rector underscores UERJ's commitment to advancing postgraduate education in mechanical engineering.

UERJ's dedication to enhancing its research capabilities is evident in the substantial investments made towards faculty qualification, full-time academic positions, and the expansion of its research profile. Initiatives like PROCAD and PROCIENCIA, along with the recruitment of research-focused faculty members, highlight the institution's commitment to academic excellence in the technical-scientific domain.

The university's strategic focus on quality postgraduate education is further demonstrated by the successful accreditation of its Master's programs in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Geomatics by CAPES, reflecting UERJ's prominence in the field of engineering education.
